The outside of the Ice Palace in Saranac Lake — an homage to the Colosseum in Rome in honor of this year’s Roman around Carnival theme — was completed on Tuesday. Volunteers constructed a set of steps on the street-facing exterior of the icy amphitheatre, where thrones, ice carvings and columns will also be constructed, according to Shelly Manchester, the official photographer for the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. Ice sculptors also finished up a chariot ice sculture that rests outside the palace. Manchester said the Ice Palace is on track to be finished in time for the lighting of the Ice Palace and Winter Carnival opening fireworks display at 7 p.m. Saturday. (Enterprise photo — Lauren Yates)
