TUPPER LAKE — While Wednesday’s girls basketball game between Tupper Lake and the Parishville-Hopkinton Panthers wasn’t high-scoring, the Lumberjacks did just enough to edge out the Panther 19-16 on their home court.

Tied 13-13 in the fourth quarter, Tupper Lake found a bit of momentum and jumped out to a 6-0 run. The team then was able to hold on the rest of the way to pick up their second win of the season. The team previously topped Johnsburg 29-17 on Dec. 29, 2022.

“We had some people contributing,” Lumberjacks head coach Travis Dupuis said. “Some people were pretty balanced. We moved the ball better in the second half. We were happy with how they regrouped after the first half.”

Six Lumberjacks were able to record a point, with Emily Bissonette leading the way with five. Rachel Sorensen had four points, while Jadah McBroom and Rebecca Becker recorded three points each. Bela Cabral and Tamina Moutin each chipped in two points.

Parishville-Hopkinton’s Emma Phippen led her team with five points. Marygrace Guiney and Natalie Snell had four points each for the Panthers.

After taking a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, Parishville-Hopkinton extended its lead to 7-5 right before halftime thanks in part to a basket from Bailey Warren in the final minute of the second quarter.

“In the first half, we struggled a little bit on offense, but so did Parishville,” Dupuis said. “It was a really low-scoring game in the first half. During halftime, we kind of tried to get them to regroup and they did a good job and came back.”

After intermission, Tupper Lake had its best quarter scoring eight points, with many of their points coming on the fastbreak after recording steals on the defensive side. Bissonette had all five of her points in the third quarter.

“Defensively, we were a little timid in the first half,” Dupuis said. “People not wanting to foul or letting a pass go through because they didn’t think that they could get there. After halftime they were a little more aggressive and instead of, ‘I might not be able to get there’ and letting the pass go through, to ‘I’m going to take a shot and if I miss it there are people behind me that are going to help out.’ They were just more aggressive and trying to get some steals.”

Following Wednesday’s win, the Lumberjacks will return to their home court today to take on Libson Central at 6 p.m. Tupper Lake lost its lone matchup against Libson earlier in the season.
