Police: Mountain Lake Academy students stole car

LAKE PLACID — Two young students, who police say ran away from Mountain Lake Academy and stole a car for a joyride, have been charged with felonies by New York State Police after leading U.S. Border Patrol and State Police on a pursuit, which ended with damage to both law enforcement agencies’ vehicles.

State Police said two juvenile males, ages 13 and 14, have each been charged with two counts of second-degree criminal mischief and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, all felonies.

The charges stem from a Monday chase, which started after 2 p.m. when troopers responded to state Route 86 in the town of Wilmington for a report of a vehicle larceny. Police say an investigation determined the two allegedly ran away from Mountain Lake Academy on Sunday and stole a black 2013 Hyundai Elantra vehicle from a residence on Monday.

“The two juveniles drove the vehicle around surrounding areas, which led to a pursuit with Border Patrol and State Police members,” State Police wrote in a news release. “The pursuit ended with damage to both the Border Patrol vehicle and State Police vehicle.”

State Police said the vehicles had “minor damage” including scrapes.

Police said the two juveniles were arrested and transported to the State Police barracks in Malone for processing before being released with appearance tickets for Franklin County Family Court.

“It is unfortunate when our student’s behavior becomes disruptive in the greater community,” Mountain Lake Academy CEO Christopher Mariano wrote in an email. “The students involved have been returned to the school, pending further legal follow up. The school will work with those affected to mitigate any additional impacts. We greatly appreciate the assistance of the New York State Police and the Border Patrol for their response in resolving this situation.”

This is not the first time a duo of Mountain Lakes Academy students have stolen a car and run from the law.

In September 2018, two juvenile males, ages 17 and 18, allegedly stole a van from the Cobble Lookout trailhead and tried to outrun state troopers at speeds as high as 99 mph after a hiking trip with staff on the lookout trail.

Police eventually caught those runaways in the town of Schroon, after the two drove off the road and got struck on an earth embankment trying to avid a spike strip police had deployed.
