SARANAC LAKE — The second Pisgah Pedalfest brought out 60 mountain bike racers on Saturday to tear their way down “The Cure,” a flow trail on Mount Pisgah.

Karen Miemis said after the first Pedalfest last year was a success, they started planning the second year of the event right away.

Last year’s races raised money for a pump track on town land near the Elks ballfield on Ampersand Avenue. A pump track is a series of humps and turns that when ridden properly on a bicycle, bikers can use their weight and momentum to move, and not have to pedal.

Miemis said that track is almost complete and will likely open in August. This year, money from the event will go toward the completion of planned trails in that area.

The pump track was created by Backslope Trail Building and funded by donations, but the effort to get the project done was started by a group of kids, Miemis said. They put together the group Saranac Lake Innovative Cycling Kids. She said the kids showed “a lot of responsibility and initiative” and she’s been impressed with their hard work.

Martin-Kersey has been riding BMX bikes since he was 4 years old. He was in town on vacation this week when he learned about the Pedalfest and knew he had to compete in the event. Miemis’s son Will said he’s been waiting for this pump track for a while. His eyes lit up talking about it on Saturday. He’s taken one ride around the track with its builder, Max Van Wie, and said it met all his expectations.

The Saranac Lake Middle School introduced a biking club this year.

“Those kids are pumped — no pun intended — to ride it,” Miemis said.

This jump was not needed to complete the race. Miemis just did it for fun. He placed first in the 16-and-under men’s category. (Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone)
