Apple of her eye

Sofia Kite-Whidden, who turned 11 last week, shows off an apple she was drawing at ADK ArtRise in Saranac Lake on Monday. The pencil drawing, a still life study in depth and shadows, had a twist — a shiny yellow sticker foraged from a real apple. It added color, contrast and a bit of comedy to her work. The piece was interactive, too. Kite-Whidden peeled off the sticker, revealing a dark circle on the apple underneath. “Sometimes, if you take a sticker off, there’s a bruise,” she said. Kite-Whidden said drawing an apple is “like a squished, morphed, poked circle.” Kite-Whidden is at ArtRise three days a week for five different classes, ArtRise co-owner Julia Csanko said. In the studio, Kite-Whidden has an extensive portfolio of everything she’s created there. “I’ve drawn for as long as I can remember,” she said. “I really love drawing.” (Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone)
