Stop, look and jackhammer
State Department of Transportation workers jackhammer a hole on the corner of Church and Main streets in Saranac Lake on Friday, where the street light has recently been temporarily removed and replaced with stop signs at each corner. DOT spokesman Michael Flick said they are replacing the signal light at that intersection. Because the intersection is so tight, he said one of the new poles has to go where an existing pole is, meaning that existing signal couldn’t be operational while work is taking place. He said the intersection will be controlled as an all-way stop until construction is done. The temporary change drew mixed reviews at a recent village board meeting, with some saying they prefer the stop sign arrangement, and others say they saw cars flying through the intersection in the absence of a stop light, not seeing the stop signs.
