NY-21 candidate Farrell drops out

Bridie Farrell, a Democratic candidate in the race to represent New York’s 21st Congressional District, announced in a statement Friday that she will be ending her bid to unseat Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Farrell, a former nationally-ranked speed skater and an advocate for sexual assault victims, said she decided to end her campaign “after reviewing the new district maps.”

“New York’s 21st district now has a 23 point Republican advantage instead of the eight point margin it had when I launched my campaign,” she said. “I no longer see a path to victory for a Democrat in this race.”

The majority-Democratic state Legislature adopted a major reconfiguration of congressional districts throughout the state this month, including NY-21. A lawsuit challenging the redistricting effort has been filed by a group of Republican voters in state Supreme Court.

“I’m proud of our campaign. It was wholly driven by you and made possible by your support,” Farrell, of North River, said in a statement Friday. “That support enabled travel throughout the North Country where I heard from voters what our leaders need to focus on. Those needs include jobs, childcare, education, health care, housing, broadband and it goes on. Even with that list, what I consistently heard was a united love and admiration for the North Country and our region.

“I still truly believe there is more that unites us than divides us,” she added. “I hope that you do as well, and that you will remain engaged in the beautiful and fragile process of American democracy.”

Farrell grew up in Saratoga Springs. She started competing in speed skating at the national level at a very young age and hoped to make it to the Olympics. By the age of 12, she was the third-fastest short-track speedskater in the country, according to Saratoga Living magazine. Later in life, she revealed that she was sexually and psychologically abused by her mentor, Olympic silver medalist Andy Gabel, then 33-years-old.

Farrell is the founder of America Loves Kids, a nonprofit organization that advocates for survivors of child sexual abuse.

Farrell announced her candidacy for NY-21 this past July. Since then, she raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars — $247,957, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Democrats Matt Castelli, a former CIA counter-terrorism official; Matt Putorti, a lawyer from Whitehall; and Wilton resident Ezra Watson are also running to represent NY-21. So far, Putorti is top fundraiser of the Democratic candidates. He has raised $533,471 and has $261,112 cash on hand, according to the FEC. Castelli, who has been endorsed by most of the county Democratic committees in NY-21, has raised $442,372 and has $289,001 cash on hand. Watson has raised $3,562 and has $1,681 cash on hand.

Republican candidate Lonny Koons, a truck driver from West Leyden, has also thrown his hat in the ring to represent NY-21. He has raised $7,856 and has $869 cash on hand.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, has handily out-raised her opponents with more than $3.1 million cash on hand and more than $4.5 million raised, according to the FEC.

Alex DeGrasse, Stefanik’s senior advisor, said in a statement that it was “no surprise” that Farrell ended her “failed” campaign. He said “upstate New York and North Country Democrats are in total free fall.” He also panned the remaining Democratic candidates.

“We look forward to once again crushing whichever Radical extremist gets through the Democrat Primary, and we expect more Democrats to drop out to avoid embarrassing themselves,” DeGrasse said.
