Small Town Pride planned for Sunday
MALONE — Malone’s first Pride event is scheduled to take place this weekend at the Kelly Pavilion in the Malone Village Memorial Park.
Small Town Pride, a summer Pride celebration, is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday.
The event’s Facebook page describes the event as a way to spread the word that “Love is Love.”
According to Fallon Nichols, a member of the committee helping to organize the event, Sunday’s celebration will include activities, food, over 25 vendors, guest speakers, raffles, and live music.
The radio station, WYUL will be broadcasting live from the rec park from noon to 2 p.m., according to Nichols.
Nichols said there will also be 10 to 15 local agencies with information booths at Sunday’s event, which will also include food trucks, and a bounce house.
One of these agencies is the Adirondack North County Gender Alliance, a non-profit based in Saranac Lake.
According to an email from the gender alliance, Sunday’s event is, “A day of fun and love, a place to be undeniably you, an event for all of our surrounding area towns to show their love and acceptance for our LGBTQ.”
Proceeds from the raffles will go toward future Small Town Pride family events, according to Nichols.
Fallon credited a local teenager, Garrett Smith, with inspiring the event itself.
“This is our very first Pride event in Malone,” Nichols said, “I think it started out as a way to show support and raise awareness and it has turned into this event.”
Smith, 13, of Malone, said he initially wanted to attend the Pride parade in New York City, but, with his mother, decided to look into something local.
Smith said he hoped Sunday’s event was a chance for people to have fun and feel welcome in the community.
“I just hope everyone has fun, does what they want and feels welcome,” Smith said.
