LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Sinfonietta will introduce new Music Director Stuart Malina this summer.

For the past 21 years, Malina has been music director and conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted orchestras across the country (Fort Worth, Hawaii, New Mexico, Charleston, Greensboro, and Chautauqua) and internationally (Hong Kong, Russia and China). In 2003, he won Broadway’s Tony Award — along with Billy Joel — for orchestration for the musical “Movin Out.” He has performed with Zoe Caldwell and Audra Macdonald in the play “Master Class” at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Although officially part of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta family as of 2019, this is the first full season that Malina will conduct from an Adirondack podium, as the season was canceled last summer due to the coronavirus pandemic. For the past year, he has been working behind the scenes with the staff, board, musicians as well as has made all the musical selections for the current season.

The Sunday Symphony Series concerts will still be held at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts this summer starting July 11 and ending Aug. 15, but the free Wednesday Community Concerts will not be held at the Paul White Memorial Bandshell in Mid’s Park.

Instead, the first Wednesday Community Concerts have been moved to the LPCA theater for the opening show on July 7, and then the remaining concerts will be held at the North Elba Show Grounds pavilion on July 14, 21 and 28 and Aug. 4 and 11. The pavilion offers plentiful parking, flexible seating arrangements and picnicking possibilities.

In a major technological step forward, the Sinfonietta is offering the Sunday Symphony Series and Wednesday Community Concerts live or livestreamed. Patrons can now choose to attend a concert in-person, or they can be sent a web link to view the concert on their personal device. The web-viewing version of the concert will be in real time and will only be available for viewing once.

The hope is that this digital advance will allow more people the ability to access more music more readily.

For the safety of the patrons, performers volunteers and staff, all Sinfonietta concerts will be one hour with no intermission. All programs subject to change.

All patrons intending to attend a concert in-person will be required to provide proof of vaccination and proof of ID. Unvaccinated children (11 years and younger) may attend in-person concerts as long as they are in the company of vaccinated family members.
