SARANAC LAKE — Dewey Mountain has announced its Outdoor Summer Learning Series, featuring after-school outdoors classes, a mountain bike league, family learning sessions and an adventure club.

Funding to make summer programming affordable or free to local families comes from financial support from the town of Harrietstown.

Information and registration can be found at www.deweymountain.com/happenings.html.

After-school learning series

The Dewey Mountain after-school series features one- to two-hour sessions focusing on various outdoor topics. The main goal is to develop a lifelong love of the outdoors while tapping into participants’ creativity and willingness to learn. These programs aim to encourage a love of outdoor activity, foster a respect of the natural world and make for prepared outdoor explorers.

Youth mountain bike league

Kids between the ages of 9 and 14 can sign up to ride every Thursday in July and August from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. starting July 1. The first few sessions will be located at Dewey Mountain, and as the group improves it will start to explore trail networks in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Wilmington. Parents and volunteers are welcome. According to a press release from Dewey Mountain, “The focus of the youth mountain bike league will be on having fun while touching on tips on techniques to becoming a safe, confident rider.”

Family recreation learning series

The goal of this series is to get families active, learn something new and have fun. The events are designed for the “never-have-I-evers” but all families interested are welcome. There will be three sessions per clinic, repeated for July and August. These sessions will vary in length.

Dewey Mountain Adventure Club

The Dewey Mountain Adventure Club is a youth program sponsored by Dewey Mountain Friends that provides opportunities for a variety of outdoor activities throughout the summer. Designed for kids ages 8 to 12, the Adventure Club features hiking, rock climbing, paddling, mountain biking and more. Sessions are led by Chris Makowicki and a special guest. In addition to outdoor recreation, each session also includes a short lesson about subjects like Leave No Trace, wilderness rescue, wildlife and outdoor living skills.
