Students charged with assault at Mountain Lake Academy

LAKE PLACID — Seven Mountain Lake Academy students between the ages of 15 and 17 have been charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly attacking a 17-year-old student Monday.

State Police said they responded to the school at 3:18 p.m. for a reported fight in progress and charged three 15-year-olds, two 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds, all male students of Mountain Lake Academy, with third-degree assault. Police also charged a 14-year-old of Mineville.

None were named, due to their youth.

Police said the victim suffered superficial scrapes and bruises about the head and scalp from being kicked and punched and was transported first to the Lake Placid Health and Medial Fitness Center, and then to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for further care.

The charged students were released with appearance tickets for Essex County Family Court and Probation at a date determined by the court system.

Mountain Lake Academy is a private school for students who struggle with traditional learning environments.

“It is unfortunate when our student’s behavior becomes disruptive,” Mountain Lake Academy CEO Carol Prevost wrote in a statement. “Fortunately there were no significant injuries from this event.”

She said the school has a goal of developing coping skills that are attentive to students’ past trauma histories. She said students who no longer meet the school’s therapeutic programming criteria have been referred to other programs to address specific needs.

“We appreciate the support of the New York State Police and the amazing team of staff at our school,” Prevost wrote.

All students have returned to their classes and dormitories, she added.

The reason for the incident was not given.

“As a policy, we do not discuss motives,” State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman wrote in an email.
