Two die in Old Forge snowmobile collision

OLD FORGE — Two men died from a snowmobile collision Thursday night near Old Forge, a popular snowmobiling destination with an extensive trail network.

The town of Webb Police Department said the cause of the collision “appears to be imprudent speed for conditions, alcohol involvement, snow dust/with limited visibility and failure to keep right for both operators.”

Police identified the deceased men as Jason S. Sasso, 39, of Saugerties, and Douglas J. Wilbert, 42, of Macedon.

Webb police said they responded at 10:46 p.m. to the collision near the Enchanted Forest / Water Safari parking lot, on a connector trail between North Street and state Route 28. They said they determined that Sasson was driving a 2020 Polaris snowmobile and Wilbert was heading in the opposite direction on a 2020 Ski-Doo sled, and that they struck each other “nearly head on.”

“Both snowmobiles sustained severe damage to the driver’s left sides, and skis traveled up and over both machines, striking both victims with blunt force trauma,” police reported.

Both men were declared dead at the scene.

Police said that section of trail was rough at the rime, with small bumps caused by heavy snowmobile traffic.
