I-87 crash leaves woman critical

LEWIS — A woman is in critical condition and a man was treated for minor injuries after a box truck crash on Interstate 87 Monday in the town of Lewis.

State Police said the driver, Edward McCray III, 32, of Plainfield, New Jersey, lost control and the truck went off the roadway before 2 p.m. The truck crashed through guide rails and overturned down the west embankment of I-87 at mile marker 126, going southbound.

A passenger, Diamond D. Lear, 24, of Phoenix, Arizona, was partially ejected. She was airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, where it was determined that she suffered a minor brain bleed, a lacerated liver, a collapsed lung and a fractured pelvis. She remained in critical condition as of Wednesday evening, according to a hospital spokesperson.

McCray was transported by Elizabethtown-Lewis Ambulance to Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh, where he was treated for minor injuries.

State Police were assisted by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and said the crash remains under investigation.
