Feeding in flight

A male red-breasted nuthatch takes flight after grabbing a peanut from Donna Elliott’s outstretched hand on the Bloomingdale Bog Trail Saturday. Immediately after this bird left, a large gray jay — also known as a Canada jay — landed in her hand. She had been waiting all day to entice one of these birds to land. Her daughter Tori Elliott said her mother was like a “Disney princess” with all the chickadees and nuthatches she was attracting. Tori, of Ogdensburg, has fed birds at this spot twice before, once with her father, after reading about it online. This time, Donna, of Colton, joined. Donna said she likes it when the birds look her in the eye as they take seeds and nuts from her palm. (Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone)
