A Syracuse woman got lost while hiking Allen Mountain last week and spent three nights alone in the chilly High Peaks Wilderness.

She was rescued by helicopter on the shoulder of the mountain Wednesday, cold and wet, but alive.

Angela Poblocki started her solo hike Sunday and was reported missing to the state Department of Environmental Conservation at 7 p.m. Monday. A 20-member team of DEC forest rangers searched the forest, which was blanketed in snow and ice, for three days before locating her at approximately 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, according to DEC Public Information Officer Lori Severino.

“The hiker was unprepared for the weather, did not have proper equipment, and failed to maintain her cell phone battery, hampering search efforts,” Severino wrote in an email. “DEC encourages visitors to be sure to properly prepare and plan before entering the backcountry.”

She said New York State Police Aviation, State Police troopers and local volunteers assisted.

Temperatures were in the low 30s and 20s each night.

“The first night several Rangers hiked to the peak in frigid conditions during the night,” Severino wrote.

After Poblocki was located Wednesday, she was able to hike with assistance to an interior landing zone and was flown by a State Police helicopter to a site where the Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad was waiting for her with an ambulance, according to Severino.

Forest rangers cannot speak to reporters without permission from DEC, or they will be disciplined. The DEC press office said the rangers involved in this rescue are not available to speak.

Poblocki is an aspiring 46er, according to her Facebook page.
