LAKE PLACID — A local couple is exploring the idea of opening up a new seasonal outdoor market in Lake Placid.

Emily Rath and her husband Tom have submitted an application to the North Elba-Lake Placid Joint Review Board seeking authorization to operate a seasonal outdoor market on their property at 176 Parkside Drive. The request is on the board’s agenda for its next meeting on Wednesday.

“The village of Lake Placid needs an outdoor seasonal market!” Emily wrote in the couple’s application.

The market, if approved, would be located outside of an old barn on the property. Emily told the Enterprise on Thursday that the market would be called The Stables — a nod to the property’s former use as a horse stable for local police — and would feature seasonal items.

When she and her husband travel, Emily said they like to visit flea markets and seasonal markets, and they thought it’d be nice to have something like that here.

“A winter market would consist of Christmas trees, wreaths, kissing balls and Adirondack-style gifts,” Emily wrote in the application. “A fall market would consist of mums, pumpkins, cornstalks, etc.”

Parking would be “strictly barnyard parking as marked,” Emily notes in the couple’s application. “A few upper lots would be available if needed to enter/exit (the) barn driveway and enter/exit through eased drive onto Parkside.”

“There is ample parking for the small operation,” Emily wrote.

The Raths consulted with village Department of Public Works Superintendent Brad Hathaway on where they should put a curb cut entrance, which would be located on Morningside Drive, according to a map attached to the application.

The market, if approved, would operate “seasonal weekends and select weekdays,” according to the application.
