State troopers are reaching out to the public for help in finding out who burglarized a veterans retreat camp in Onchiota in early May.
The Sgt. Carlton A. Clark Memorial Veterans Camp is located at 1490 Franklin County Route 60. It is owned by Paul Smith’s College but leased to Homeward Bound Adirondacks, a Saranac Lake-based organization that would host free retreats for veterans there. The facility consists of five cabins and a main lodge, State Police said.
Police say that sometime between May 2 and 9, someone damaged a cabin’s door window and stole various items from the the camp, including roughly $600 worth of cedar siding.
“I never thought that anyone would steal from Veterans, the brave and selfless soldiers who sacrificed for our freedom,” Homeward Bound’s Valerie Ainsworth posted on the group’s Facebook page May 26. “I never thought that anyone would steal cedar siding off the outside of a cabin that is being used to house soldiers struggling with symptoms of PTSD. I never thought that someone would steal the fire escape ladder from the third floor of the lodge, the movie projector, the toaster, food and so many other things.”
Many of the stolen items had been donated, she said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Dylan Dawson at 518-873-2750.
“We’ve interviewed several businesses and individuals in the area and were just not able to develop any leads,” said Trooper Jennifer Fleishman, spokesperson for State Police Troop B. “The investigating officer reached out to me to see if we could go this route.”
Homeward Bound recently posted photos of a retreat for veterans it held at the camp in late June and said it has another scheduled for this weekend.
