Keene drive-in movie tonight is ‘Wonder’

KEENE VALLEY — The town of Keene’s Youth Commission is hosting a drive-in movie at Marcy Field tonight.

The local youth organization is planning to screen the 2017 movie “Wonder,” which follows the story a 10-year-old boy with Treacher Collins syndrome, a genetic disorder that can result in facial deformities, going to public school for the first time.

The movie starts at 9:15 p.m., with parking open at 8 p.m. The cost to attend is $10 per car, with proceeds to benefit the Keene Youth Commission.

Organizers are asking that people who attend remain in their cars at all times during the screening. Cars will be parked at least 6 feet apart.

This event was authorized by the Keene Town Council prior to the board’s adoption of its temporary events moratorium and was given an exemption from the new rule, along with the Keene Farmer’s Market.

The ban, adopted last month, applies to every large gathering on town roads, on Marcy Field and in town-owned buildings such as the Keene Community Center. In addition to concerns that gatherings could result in residents being exposed to the coronavirus, town councilors also expressed concern that with many private event organizers unable to secure insurance specific to the coronavirus pandemic, if a lawsuit is filed after an event, liability might fall upon the town’s taxpayers.

With local movie theaters like Lake Placid’s Palace Theatre and Tupper Lake’s State Theater closed since the New York State on PAUSE executive order was signed in March, individuals and organizations have begun hosting pop-up drive-in movies throughout the last few weeks. A screening of “Back to the Future” on May 21 kicked off the trend locally, organized by the owners of Tucker Farms in Gabriels and Eric Wilson of Good Guy Productions. Wilson later partnered with the Paul Smith’s College Boosters Club for a screening of “The Goonies” in Gabriels, and with The Mix and Adirondack 105 radio stations for movie screenings in Lake Placid (“Happy Gilmore”), Gabriels (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”) and Tupper Lake (“Men in Black”) last month.
