RAY BROOK — New York State Police Superintendent Keith M. Corlett has appointed Maj. Ruben Anthony Oliver of Indian Lake as the 27th troop commander of Troop B.

Oliver grew up in Staten Island. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1984 to 1988. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is married with four children.

He started his State Police career when he entered the academy on March 20, 1989. In July 1999, he was promoted to sergeant. In January 2001 he was promoted to station commander, and for the next seven years he served at the Tupper Lake, Indian Lake and Schroon Lake stations. In 2008, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and he served on the Casino Detail at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, the Protective Services Unit, Troop G (in New York’s Capital Region, based in Latham) and the Office of Emergency Management. He was also designated as the officer in charge of the Mobile Field Unit in Troop G.

In November 2015, he was promoted to captain and assigned to the Forensic Investigation Center at Division Headquarters in Albany. He was also assigned as a captain at the State Police Academy in charge of the Promotional Exam Detail. He was promoted to the rank of major in December 2018 and assigned as the director of human resources at Division Headquarters.

Oliver’s appointment to Troop B commander was effective May 28. He replaces Maj. Darrin S. Pitkin, who has now been appointed the commander of Troop D, based in Oneida, which includes Jefferson, Lewis, Herkimer, Oneida, Onondoga and Oswego counties. Pitkin has spent most of his career in Troop D and still lives there with his family.

Oliver’s command covers five counties in northern New York: St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, Essex and a portion of Hamilton. Troop B operates from 21 installations. Troop B provides service to 87 towns, 24 villages and two cities. The Troop B headquarters is in Ray Brook on state Route 86.
