When and where to vote in the Dem presidential primary

The Franklin and Essex County boards of election have released the voting dates, times and locations for the Democratic presidential primary — both for nine days of early voting in Malone and Lewis, and on primary day, June 23, at each town’s regular polling places.

However, the state Board of Elections is encouraging voters to vote by absentee ballot due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Joe Biden is the only Democratic presidential candidate who has not dropped out, but New York Democrats will get to choose anyway. There are also still multiple candidates running to be delegates at the part convention. The state Republican Party decided long ago to cancel its presidential primary and give the nomination to incumbent Donald Trump.

The state of New York planned to cancel the Democratic primary, too, but presidential candidates and delegate coalitions sued. The state lost in a court battle, and the primary is on, to the joy of delegate candidates.

To vote, you must be registered in the Democratic Party. The last day to register for the first time is Friday. The date for an already registered voter to change party affiliation to vote in this primary election has passed.

The ballot will include the 11 Democratic candidates still on the ballot: Michael Bennet, Biden, Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Deval Patrick, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Yang — as well as the delegate candidates for each of them.

Also on the ballot are 30 candidates seeking six delegate spots for New York’s 21st Congressional District. Those 30 candidates represent Biden, Buttigieg, Sanders, Warren and Yang. None is running to represent Bennet, Bloomberg, Gabbard, Klobuchar, Patrick or Steyer.

In Essex County, there is also a Republican primary in Chesterfield for a town council seat.

All voters eligible to participate in the June 23 elections have been mailed an absentee ballot application with return paid postage, According to the state BoE. Every voter is eligible for an absentee ballot this year, by selecting “temporary illness or physical disability” as the reason for requesting the absentee ballot.

These ballot applications should be turned in as soon as possible and must be received by the local county board of elections postmarked no later than June 16 to receive a ballot by mail.

Voters may also email, fax or call their county board of elections to request an absentee ballot without the use of the application, by providing their name and address.

The last day to return a ballot by mail is postmarked June 22, provided that it is received by the applicable BoE by June 30. If returned personally, it must be received by the board before 9 p.m. June 23.
