Site plan OK’d for judo, fitness facility

SARANAC LAKE — The village Development Board approved a site plan review for Barkeater Training during Tuesday night’s meeting.

Barkeater Training is a personal fitness and martial arts facility at 64 Broadway, across the street from Bitters & Bones. The building was previously used as an Off Track Betting site. The gambling has since moved across the street into the Romano’s Saranac Lanes bowling alley as self-service terminals.

Business owners Paul Micheal Slebioda and Ellen Hoepfinger had already started operations and put up signage before they received approvals from the Development Board.

“It happens sometimes, and people get a little ahead of themselves,” Development Board Chair Tom Boothe said in a phone interview Wednesday.

Michael and Hoepfinger agreed the signage was inappropriate and said they would take it down until they receive the correct permits.

The approved site plan review allows them to continue to operate their fitness business.
