LAKE PLACID — Essex County’s new Department of Motor Vehicles office in Lake Placid is slated to open next month.
The new satellite office will be located on the second floor of the North Elba Town Hall, where a senior bingo program was once hosted. The office will likely be open two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to Essex County Clerk Joseph Provoncha.
The exact opening date for the new location is unclear. County workers are still working on putting up framing for the counters, and will be moving up license plates and secure documents in the coming weeks, according to Provoncha.
“I’ve been approached throughout the years to open a DMV in Lake Placid,” he said. “Finally, the time was right. I think it will be a success.”
The North Elba Town Council previously authorized the county’s use of the town hall space on June 11, 2019.
The Lake Placid location will be Essex County’s third DMV office. The main office is located in the county complex in Elizabethtown, and a satellite office is located on Montcalm Street in Ticonderoga.
There is a DMV office already established in Saranac Lake, but revenue generated at that office goes to Franklin County, not Essex County.
Essex County keeps 12.7 cents of every dollar residents spend on renewing their licenses and registration at DMV locations within the county. The county also collects a $25 execution fee on passports.
