WILMINGTON — Make-A-Wish Northeast New York Ambassador Jimmy Briaddy and two-time Olympic medalist Alpine skier Andrew Weibrecht will be at the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center Sunday, accepting $10 donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in exchange for half-price lift tickets.

Make-A-Wish volunteers will man a table adjacent to the lift ticket windows at which Adopt-A-Wish stars may be purchased. For every $10 star, a skier will receive half off of the regular lift ticket price.

Skiers can also learn race techniques that day from Weibrecht, three-time Olympian and Make-A-Wish Northeast New York trustee. They can register to free ski with Weibrecht from 10-11:30 a.m. and then compete in a recreational dual giant slalom race from 1:30-3 p.m. The cost to participate is $100 per skier ($75 for season ticket holders), and the free ski and race are limited to the first 50 registrants. Included in the registration are a lift ticket, a race and a post-race reception. All proceeds benefit the foundation.

In addition, there will be a drawing for a three-day, two-night stay at the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, which is owned by Weibrecht’s family. Tickets are $25 each, or five for $100. Only 350 tickets will be sold.

The drawing will be held at 3:45 p.m. at a complimentary reception at the mountain. Raffle participants need not be present to win.

“We are incredibly grateful to Whiteface Mountain and Andrew Weibrecht for what they are doing to make this unique fundraiser possible,” chapter CEO William C. Trigg, III, said in a press release. “Through this event, which helps generate awareness of Make-A-Wish Northeast New York in the North Country, it is our hope that we will be able to be introduced to even more prospective wish kids, volunteers and donors.”

The 9-year-old Briaddy has worked with Make-A-Wish before. In late 2018, he helped raise $1,812.36 for the foundation. His original goal in November was $1,000.

“Raising money isn’t easy,” Jimmy told the Enterprise in January. “It’s pretty special. So over the month we just kept raising and raising, and the jar got more full.”

The regional Make-A-Wish group recently hosted 8-year-old Tiago Cusano of Miami at the Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg. Cusano had never seen snow, but the native Floridian developed a fascination for bobsledding while watching the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics during an extended hospitalization for cancer treatment.

In a press release, Weibrecht wrote, “Through the generosity of the people of Lake Placid and the Olympic movement, for nearly a week Tiago and his family spent time with U.S. Olympic and World Cup medalists, witnessed a World Cup Bobsled and Skeleton competition, rode in a bobsled, snowboarded, spoke with members of the Jamaican bobsled team and experienced the beauties of our Olympic Village first-hand from their home-base here at the Mirror Lake Inn.”

Starting at $3.92/week.
