Man charged in Tail O’ the Pup theft

A Saranac Lake man forged and stole checks amounting to more than $3,000, State Police say.

William L. Roberts, 39, was arrested Jan. 29 for allegedly stealing the five checks from the Tail O’ The Pup restaurant in Ray Brook.

Four were forged and made payable to “cash” and “William Roberts,” State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman.

They were allegedly cashed and deposited into Roberts’s personal account at Champlain National Bank in Saranac Lake.

Roberts was already incarcerated in Clinton County Jail the day of his arrest, Fleishman said, so an arrest warrant was issued by North Elba Town Justice Dean Dietrich, and an order to produce was utilized.

Roberts was arraigned by Dietrich and sent back to Clinton County jail.

He was still there Monday night.
