Police: CVPH theft accomplished with an altered deposit slip
PLATTSBURGH — A former accountant for University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital stole thousands from the company.
Sarah Montano, 29, of Texas appeared in Plattsburgh City Court on Oct. 25, where she pleaded guilty to petit larceny and third-degree forgery, both misdemeanors.
She was granted a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay $19,068 in restitution and fines.
Montano was arrested that same day and originally charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree forgery, both felonies.
She altered at least one Key Bank deposit slip between January and April 2017 while working as an accountant for the hospital, City Police Chief Levi Ritter said.
The stolen funds totaled more than $18,568, the chief said.
Montano lived in the area at the time of the theft, Ritter said, and moved to Texas before it was discovered.
She could not be reached for comment.
“Our understanding is that Sarah has been working with the authorities, and full restitution will be made,” said Chris Blake, the hospital’s senior marketing and communications specialist.
“We’re thankful for that and hope this allows her to start a new chapter in her life.”
