LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Village Board of Trustees approved an additional event for the International Children’s Games in January at Monday night’s board meetings.

The ICG is a winter sports competition from Jan. 6 to the 11 where about 460 student athletes ages 12-15 from around the world will participate in events such as hockey, alpine skiing and figure skating. Along with the sports, the local organizing committee is also setting up fun activities for the student-athletes to enjoy in between competitions.

On behalf of the Lake Placid ICG organizing committee, executive director Eileen Mowrey requested use of Main Street from the Conference Center to Mid’s Park for a parade Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. The group also requested to use of Mid’s Park, so the student-athletes and their delegates can drink hot chocolate provided by the Lake Placid Rotary Club and watch a fireworks show. The fireworks would be ignite across the lake at the Lake Placid Club Boat House. The outdoor festivities will end at 8 p.m.

After that, the Palace Theater agreed to rent out the entire theater for the student-athletes to watch sport-related films such as “Miracle,” the biopic of the underdog U.S. hockey team who beat the U.S.S.R. in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.

In addition to the parade festivities, Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism CEO and President Jim McKenna requested transportation assistance from the village. The board agreed to block off part of the municipal parking lot next to the Conference Center, so buses going to Olympic sport venues can easily pick up and drop off student-athletes.
