SARANAC LAKE — More than two dozen protesters gathered outside of the Harrietstown Town Hall at 1 p.m. on Monday to protest Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination process and to stand in solidarity with victims of sexual assault.

The protest was organized by Beth Glover, Gail Brill and Leslie Dame in the spirit of the #BelieveSurvivors 1 p.m. national walkout, organized by Time’s Up, a social media movement and legal defense fund that supports victims of sexual harassment, along with other groups and movements like #MeToo.

“I want to stand in solidarity with all women who are sexual assault victims,” said Glover, who splits her time between the village and New York City. “It’s not just about Kavanaugh.”

Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court has been a flashpoint of national contention since Christine Blasey Ford reported that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a high school party in the summer of 1982. On Sunday, Deborah Ramirez, who attended Yale with Kavanaugh in 1983-84, accused him of sexual misconduct at a dorm room party.

Kavanaugh has unequivocally denied both allegations, characterizing them as smears and stalling tactics to halt his nomination.

“Here’s my question: if he’s a man of truth and justice, why wouldn’t he want to have this whole thing investigated?” said Brill of Saranac Lake.

“Its a lifetime appointment, so why would we rush this through?” Glover said. “They’re just rushing it through. They’re just rushing, rushing, rushing.”

Amy Stringer, an actress in town working on Pendragon Theatre’s “Pride and Prejudice,” said she came to demonstrate her commitment to supporting women.

“I’m here to support Dr. Ford,” Stringer said. “That someone could be nominated to the Supreme Court with allegations like this is so infuriating, but also in line with exactly what this administration has been like.”

Ford’s lawyers have said she will testify against Kavanaugh in an open hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, during which Kavanaugh will also present his defense.

“My ancestors fought in the American Revolution,” Brill said. “It’s just time to stand up and say, ‘What the hell is going on in this country?'”
