On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s campaign announced that it will donate the maximum of $2,700 to the nine Democratic congressional candidates in New York facing incumbent Republicans and the Democrat running for an open seat.

This includes Tedra Cobb of Canton, who is facing U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro.

“Governor Cuomo deserves credit for sounding the alarm about Elise Stefanik’s vote to repeal ACA [the Affordable Care Act] which would have thrown thousands of New Yorkers off insurance coverage, killed thousands of upstate jobs and closed rural hospitals, clinics and skilled nursing facilities,” Cobb wrote in a statement provided to the Times. “I’m grateful for his support.”

On Wednesday, Cobb campaign director Anna Sorensen said the campaign had received the check from Cuomo’s campaign. She said that there were no plans at the moment for the governor to campaign for Cobb.

Sorensen said that Cobb had not announced who she was supporting for governor. During the primary she said she was undecided between Cuomo and insurgent Working Families nominee Cynthia Nixon and has not clarified whom she is supporting since.

“It is certainly the case that we appreciate Cuomo’s support, and we appreciate his drawing attention to the issues [Cobb] is running on,” Sorensen said.

Also on Wednesday, Sorensen said the campaign had filed the necessary petitions to appear on an independent line on the ballot, Congressional District 21 Unites.

To get on the ballot under the CD 21 Unites line, Cobb needed 3,500 signatures on the independent nominating petition turned in to the state Board of Elections between July 24 and 31. According to a statement provided by the campaign, it filed 3,976 signatures on July 31.

Sorenson said the petitions had not been challenged, but might be.

“We’ll see,” she said. “Do we expect it? Certainly a general [challenge] is pro forma.”
