SARANAC LAKE — Just call it cold reliable.

A 66-year-old ice cream machine is still pumping out sweet treats at the popular Donnelly’s Soft Ice Cream stand along Route 86 in Saranac Lake.

Owner/operator Peter Donnelly said that although the ice-cream-machine company has gone out of business, he is able to keep it operating by having a machinist make parts for it whenever it breaks down.

Donnelly, 75, said that he loves the ice cream it turns out and will keep it running as long as he can, adding “It may outlast me.”

The compact building he works out of measures 17 feet by 17 feet and was once a warming hut for skiers from a nearby ski run.

Donnelly said they serve about 80,000 cones a year, with the favorites still being chocolate and vanilla.

Starting at $19.00/week.
