LAKE PLACID — Earlier this week a student shared with faculty a rumor about a threat of violence at Lake Placid Middle-High School. That prompted administrators to call in village police, who have had an increased presence at the school in recent days.

“When we receive information like that, we tend to act pretty quickly on it,” Roger Catania, superintendent of the Lake Placid Central School District, said Thursday.

Catania didn’t provide details about the threat but said it’s all just based on rumors right now and that the Lake Placid Police Department is conducting an investigation.

Local police Chief Bill Moore said, “There hasn’t been any real threat that we know of.”

Catania said that he has informed families and faculty of the threat of violence with a robocall.

“I’ve done two of those already this week,” he said. “I’ll probably do another one soon.”

On Thursday afternoon, high school Principal Dana Wood held an assembly with all the students to discuss the rumor. Catania said the assembly was to assure the students that they are safe in these last few days of the school year.

The rumor was brought to the school’s attention personally, but LPMHS also offers the option to provide troubling information through Anonymous Alerts, a mobile app where students can anonymously report incidents of bullying, violence and harassment.

“I’m pleased that students are willing to share with us,” Catania said.
