College’s Weekender has offerings for visitors and locals, too

As many as 100 cyclists are expected to hit the roads here Friday for the three-day road cycling event, the Weekender at Paul Smith’s College.

Coming from as far away as the Midwest, many will be visiting the Adirondacks for the first time, Cycle Adirondacks said in a press release.

The bicyclists will cycle the region on a three-day tour with daily rides for all ability levels, while hiking, canoeing and other activities are available for the noncyclists who accompany them.

Motorists won’t see traffic delays or detours, Cycle Adirondacks Marketing and Communications Director Doug Haney said.

“Cycle Adirondacks events are tours with cyclists riding at different paces,” he explained. “Therefore, they spread out quite a bit. That’s especially true for the Weekender, which has multiple routes each day.

“We follow all regular traffic laws and won’t close any roads. Drivers shouldn’t expect any changes in traffic, but we do recommend providing 3 feet in distance between cyclists and cars when passing.”

“The New York Bike Coalition is a great source for both drivers and cyclists looking to be safer while sharing the road,” Haney said. Check out the site at http://www.nybc.net/resources-2.

Raptors, butterflies

And the public is invited to take part in some Weekender activities.

At 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, master falconer Mark Manske from Adirondack Raptors will present an interactive program at the St. Regis Cafe, in the Joan Weill Student Center at Paul Smith’s College.

And Saturday, June 30, from 3 to 7 p.m., ADK Action will host a Pollinator Party at the Paul Smith’s VIC, 8023 state Route 30 in Paul Smiths.

That event includes draft horse demonstrations, butterfly house tours, face-painting, guided hikes and native pollinator planting with ADK Action.

The band Partridge in the Pines — its members are Paul Smith’s alumni — will play live music from 5 to 7 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from the new Paul Smith’s College food truck.

“We are excited to offer a live workshop to help community members lean to identify pollinator friendly plants and how to convert an underutilized garden space into pollinator habitat,” ADK Action Executive Director Brittany Christenson said in the release.

Starting at $3.92/week.
