2.7-magnitude quake hits North Country

MOIRA — A small earthquake struck at 12:59 a.m. Wednesday.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 2.7 and occurred at a depth of 3.11 miles, about 15.5 miles southwest of Malone, according to information posted on the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Quakes in the 2.5 to 3 magnitude range are the smallest usually felt by people.

“I picked it up on all my stations,” said Frank Revetta, emeritus professor of geology at SUNY Potsdam and local earthquake expert. He said he had picked it up on six different stations, but had not yet had time to do his own calculations on the location and magnitude of the quake.
