Saranac Lake man found guilty in Essex County court

Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague announced that on Friday, Feb. 9, an Essex County jury returned verdicts of guilty in the matter of People v. Todd Dunham.

Dunham, of Saranac Lake, was found guilty of engaging in sexual conduct, oral sexual conduct, and sexual intercourse with a person while that person was incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless in September 2016.

The jury trial began on Feb. 5, 2018 and a verdict was reached on Feb. 9 after seven hours of deliberation. Verdicts of guilty were returned on: One count of rape in the first degree (Class B violent felony), one count of sexual abuse in the first degree (Class D violent felony) and one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree (Class B violent felony). On each B felony, Dunham faces a five to seven years in state prison with 3 to 10 years post-release supervision.

Dunham will be sentenced April 23, 2018.

District Attorney Kristy Sprague thanked the victim for coming forward and having the courage to testify. “Justice was served with this verdict and with it, hopefully a message to other victims to have confidence to come forward and not live in silence.
