There’s a bar called the Poor House Saloon in Jefferson, Louisiana. One of the locals is Hughie, an old guy who drinks nothing but white Russians. After Hughie learned that Devinne Meyers, a 20-something from Binghamton, New York, plays music, he said, “Well I’ve got a guitar. Why don’t you sing for us?

Shortly after Meyers finished her impromptu set, the owner of the Poor House came out from the back of house and said, “All right. I’d like to book you Monday nights.” Monday night was also steak night.

“That was a pretty magical time,” Meyers said, “and my first taste of performing live.”

Today, Meyers is an established musician based out of Binghamton. She’s played shows in New York, North Carolina, Louisiana and the New England area. Her blend of folk, pop and alternative won her the 2016 Spotlight Sing-Off on 100.5 the Drive, Binghamtons alternative radio station,

Meyers will perform at 20 Main in AuSable Forks at 4 p.m. Saturday.

When she was just a little girl, Devinne Meyers had a good surrounding of creativity. She messed around on her father’s friend’s keyboard; she’d watch her mother clean the house and listen along to her collection of Alanis Morissette and Bonnie Tyler CDs; and American children’s poet and singer-songwriter Shel Silverstein was a daily digest. At age 16, she realized the potential of marrying her two loves for music and poetry, which led to her composing of original songs.

“Ever since I was a little kid, music was always a kind of refuge,” Meyers said. “It was something that was always there for me.”

She writes about a lot of different experiences, but Meyers said she tends to write songs about her family and where she comes from.

“I came from a humble family of farmers. They’re originally from Italy and had a farm in Corinth. I like to write about the working class a lot.”

One of Meyers more emotional songs is “Feeling Alive,” which has her trying to relate to her stepfather’s battle with depression.

“It actually took his life when I was 19 years old,” Meyer said. “There was a day I was feeling particularly blue. That day I was trying to empathize with him. I thought, ‘How would my dad have felt at this moment?'”

Meyers fingerpicks her way up and down the neck of the guitar as she sings in a somber tone, “Sometimes wanting to die is feeling alive.”

Meyers has her official debut studio album coming out soon, titled “Silver Line” She’s currently working on the record and hopes to release it in early spring before a tour through Texas. It’s available for pre-order now on her website.

On her website, Meyers says, “I used the term a couple of times in song, meant to depict a silver lining behind a cloud, but the instance that struck was when my roommate Jeff said to me, ‘Stop looking for the cloud in the silver lining!’ That moment really resonated with me in a proverbial ‘glass half empty/half full’ kind of way. This advice inspired the tune, ‘The Day is New,’ and has kind of been my mantra ever since.”
