DEC warns of heavy backcountry use over holiday weekend
RAY BROOK — The state Department of Environmental Conservation is warning hikers and paddlers that the holiday weekend will bring plenty of people to the High Peaks and northern Adirondacks.
In its weekly High Peaks backcountry conditions report, the DEC said “popular interior campsites filling by Friday evening and popular trailhead parking lots will reach capacity early each day. Expect to encounter many people on the trails and waterways. Seek out recreational opportunities in lesser used areas of the Adirondacks.”
Additionally, the DEC said forest rangers would be stationed at Adirondak Loj Rd. to inform hikers when parking areas are full. A ranger will be at South Meadow Lane to direct people to other hiking destinations when no more parking is available.
