LAKE PLACID — A historic trail around Avalanche Lake in the heart of the High Peaks Wilderness re-opened Friday, the Adirondack Mountain Club announced late Friday afternoon.
Renovation of the iconic “Hitch-Up-Matildas” boardwalks was completed by the Student Conservation Association trail crew as part of the federal civil society program Americorps after 10 days of work.
Due to the renovations, hikers were unable to proceed beyond the northern terminus of Avalanche Lake south to Lake Colden through the famous wooden trail bolted above Avalanche Lake at base of the 3,800-foot Avalanche Mountain. Hikers traveling north through the pass coming from Lake Colden and the Flowed Lands also weren’t able to go farther than the southern end of Avalanche Lake.
The “Hitch-Up-Matildas” consist of two sets of planks bolted into the cliff face along the northwestern shoreline of the lake. The pass is also a popular spot for rock climbers and those looking to scramble up to the 4,714-foot summit of Mount Colden through a steep, rocky slide in the middle of the mountain’s steep northwestern face known as the Trap Dike.
