Man allegedly fought with girlfriend, police after driving drunk

A Piercefield man charged earlier this month with felony assault and several other crimes, stemming from an alleged domestic dispute, appeared at Tupper Lake’s police station Tuesday to submit to a charge of felony driving while intoxicated.

Tupper Lake village police arrested Steven W. Webber, 28, at 8:17 p.m. Tuesday and charged him with driving while intoxicated, upgraded to a felony due to a previous DWI conviction within the last 10 years. Police said the charge is from an incident that spanned the night of Saturday, July 1 into Sunday, July 2, when Webber was allegedly drinking and driving on Main Street before he arrived at his girlfriend’s house and proceeded to assault her. Police said he also fought police while he was being taken into custody, attempted to flee the scene and continued to resist arrest while being taken to a hospital. Police said Webber refused to submit to breathalyzer or sobriety tests that night.

After Webber was released from the hospital on the morning of July 2, village police charged him with second-degree assault, a felony; resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors; and disorderly conduct, a violation. He was arraigned in village court on July 2, when bail was set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bail bond. Webber did not post bail initially and was sent to Franklin County Jail in Malone, though he was released at a later date after bail was posted.

Webber returned to the village police station Tuesday to be processed for the felony DWI charge. He was released on his own recognizance after an appearance in village court and is scheduled to return to village court on July 17 on all charges stemming from the July 1 incidents.

Police said the July 1 incidents were initially brought to their attention when bystanders on Main Street reported erratic driving.
