MALONE — Actor and director Ben Stiller visited the North Country on Saturday, preparing to shoot his eight-episode Showtime series on the 2015 escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

While in Malone, he visited two restaurants, Donovan’s and Sansone’s. He also visited Alice Hyde hospital and the former True Stitch factory.

When asked what his first reaction to hearing about the escape was, Stiller said, “Wow, I can’t believe they actually got out.”

Stiller also commented on what made the escape of inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat movie material.

“As you get into the whole story, the plot keeps getting deeper and deeper,” he said.

Stiller also said that he was interested in the length of time Matt and Sweat spent before the actual escape, conning prison sewing shop supervisor Joyce Mitchell, who was eventually convicted of helping the pair.
