APA to decide fate of campground plans

RAY BROOK — The state Adirondack Park Agency will decide if proposed changes to some state-run campgrounds align with the State Land Master Plan at its usual monthly meeting on Thursday.

The unit management plans for Buck Pond campground in Onchiota and Caroga Lake campground in the southern Adirondacks will be on the table for the APA board to vote on first thing Thursday morning.

The meeting kicks off at 9 a.m. at agency headquarters in Ray Brook. The State Land Committee will meet at 9:30 to discus both the campground UMPs and compliance of several other UMPs, including changes proposed to the Blue Mountain Wild Forest, Jessup River Wild Forest and Siamese Ponds Wilderness.

At 11 a.m., the Regulatory Programs Committee will vote on renewing a permit that allows municipalities and utility companies to replace utility poles in wetlands. The Regulatory Programs Committee will then consider approval of a variance for a house on Lake Placid. APA board member Art Lussi has a stake in the house and has recused himself each time the matter has come before the board.

After lunch, Eric Holmlund of Paul Smith’s College and the Adirondack Watershed Institute will brief the Park Ecology Committee on the Watershed Steward Program. The program stations both paid and volunteer stewards at boat launches and washes around the Adirondacks in an effort to limit invasive species and provide education to the general public.

The Public Awareness and Communication Committee will then meet before the full agency gathers for final votes.
