Saranac Lake RadioShack will close after all

SARANAC LAKE — Another local retail store is closing its doors, even after it said last month it would remain open.

RadioShack, located in the Saranac Lake Shopping Center plaza on Lake Flower Avenue, will shut down by the end of the month, store Manager Nora Donnelly confirmed Friday.

“I am putting up a store closing banner today, and we have to be out of the premises by the 30th of April,” she said.

RadioShack is one of the longest running chain retailers in the village. It opened for business in what was then called the Ames plaza in the fall of 1976.

The company announced in March that it would close 552 stores across the country after filing for bankruptcy for the second time in two years. Donnelly told the Enterprise then, however, that the local electronics store was not closing, and that was later confirmed by a list the company provided.

Nevertheless, Donnelly said she was told earlier this week that her store in fact will be closing.

“Even after they told us that we’re going to be open,” she said. “There’s some circumstantial reasoning behind it, but it all just comes down to the fact that they decided we’re going to close. It’s not isolated. It’s with any store that had a Sprint location in it.”

The closure will affect four employees.

Donnelly said the store is having a liquidation sale over the next few weeks.

“Everything in the store has to be sold,” she said.

The news of Radio Shack’s closure comes on the heels of the announcement that Family Dollar on upper Broadway will close at the end of June, although its parent company, Dollar Express, is seeking federal approval to sell the stores it owns to Dollar General, another discount retailer.
