Skatepark’s grand opening is Sunday

SARANAC LAKE – The designer and builders of the new Saranac Lake SkatePark are going to put on a show. Their skateboarding demonstration is expected to be the highlight of the new facility’s grand opening Sunday.

The celebration will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at the skatepark, located in what used to be part of a village parking lot behind Community Bank at 46 Broadway, next to the Enterprise building. The official address of it and the parking lot is 155 Church St., and car access is from that street.

Designer Brad Siedlecki of Arizona and the Artisan Skateparks construction crew will demonstrate what can be done at the facility – by career-dedicated skateboarders, at least.

There will also be free food, drinks, music and free raffles for a complete skateboard, T-shirts and assorted skate gear. The Kiwanis Club of Saranac Lake will distribute free helmets. Other safety gear will also be available.

Siedlecki has a strong connection to the Adirondacks, with family ties to Star Lake and annual camping vacations at Cranberry Lake. He professes a special fondness for the Saranac Lake SkatePark, and this is the first time his whole crew will return for one’s grand opening.

The Saranac Lake SkatePark’s “hubba ledge” has a unique transition feature, and Siedlecki now refers to the design as the “Saranac.”

The 5,200-square-foot, all-concrete skatepark was opened for skating last Friday, July 17, and has been consistently full of skaters ever since. It is generally a higher level of skateboard park than is available nearby.

The skatepark is the culmination of an 11-year effort by the Saranac Lake SkatePark Committee, and a longer one by local skateboarders, dating back to the mid 1990s. The money to build it came from many skateboarder-involved fundraisers, regional foundation grants, individual donors and contributions from more than 110 local businesses. This local support and grassroots effort helped the skatepark receive the top Tony Hawk Foundation Grant Award of $25,000 in August 2013. The village of Saranac Lake provided initial site preparation, and the village now owns the skatepark.

Starting at $3.92/week.
