Tupper Lake fugitive apprehended
TUPPER LAKE – After a four-day search, police apprehended a local man wanted for the allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Police also apprehended the ex-girlfriend for allegedly lying about his whereabouts.
At about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, police Sgt. Wesley Hoyt received word that Trevor Kennedy, 21, of Tupper Lake, was in an apartment at the Plaza, located at 179 Park St., village police Chief Eric Proulx wrote in a press release. Police had been searching for Kennedy since June 2, when he fled police following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend, whom he wasn’t allowed to have any contact with per a court order from Franklin County Superior Court. Proulx wrote that village and state police officers secured the scene and tried to gain entry to the apartment.
While at the door, Proulx wrote, Kennedy tried to flee the apartment by exiting through a window but, upon seeing an officer approach him, retreated back into the apartment. After more than an hour at the scene, Proulx wrote that Kennedy came out of the apartment on his own and was placed under arrest without incident.
Proulx wrote that the ex-girlfriend, Sara Peary, 35, of St. Regis Falls, was also in the apartment. Proulx wrote that Hoyt questioned Peary upon his arrival and she told Hoyt that Kennedy was not in the apartment. Proulx wrote the occupants inside the apartment, including Peary, refused a consent search of the apartment at that time. Proulx wrote Peary also came out of the apartment on her own without incident and was taken into custody.
Kennedy was charged with aggravated criminal contempt, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, second-degree criminal contempt and resisting arrest. Proulx wrote he was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in Franklin County Family Court. He was arraigned in village court in front of Judge Chris Delair and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or a $100,000 secure bond.
Peary was charged with second-degree criminal contempt and second-degree obstructing governmental administration. Proulx wrote that Peary currently has an order of protection against her issued by Franklin County Superior Court, saying she is to stay away from Kennedy in addition to the order Kennedy has directing him to stay away from Peary. She was arraigned in village court and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or a $5,000 secure bond.
Kennedy was wanted by police for an incident that occurred June 2 in the area of Washington Street park around 11 p.m. According to Proulx, police responded to a noise complaint and heard a woman screaming, “Help!” and “Stop!”
Police followed the screams through the woods to Leboeuf Street, where they found Kennedy with Peary in a small tow-behind camper behind his residence. According to Proulx, Peary was still screaming for help when police arrived on the scene.
“The officers announced their presence, at which time Mr. Kennedy fled (out the door of the camper) and into the woods,” Proulx said. Peary suffered injuries to her head and face and was transported by Tupper Lake rescue personnel to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Despite a search conducted by roughly 10 village and state police officers, a state police K-9 unit and a state police helicopter, police were unable to locate Kennedy. After searching for several hours, Proulx said the police applied for arrest warrants from Tupper Lake village court. After the initial search, village police began conducting interviews to locate Kennedy, culminating in Saturday’s arrests.
