Northwoods Inn being renamed

LAKE PLACID – Hotel North Woods – that’s the new name of the Northwoods Inn, although the signs don’t say so yet.

The 92-room hotel, the tallest building on downtown Main Street, has been undergoing a renovation since March that has cost more than $2 million. It’s expected to wrap up in June.

“We’re probably about 70 percent of the way through now,” said the hotel’s owner, Garrick Smith said after the announcement. “It’s moving nicely and we’ve had a lot of community support.”

Previously unknown information about the hotel project includes a sales tax exemption from the Essex County Industrial Development Authority, granted for the purpose of economic development and job creation. Jody Olcott, co-director Essex County IDA, said the hotel was exempted approximately $80,000 in sales tax. The hotel is expected to add an additional four employees as part of the agreement, she said.

The hotel’s new signage will go up in stages: first at the end of May and later in June.

Smith said that with the rebranding, they wanted to preserve the heritage of the original Northwoods Inn and to “develop a contemporary, but complimentary response to its legacy.”

The hotel used to be called the Hotel Marcy, opening in 1927. The original Northwoods Inn was next door, built in 1897 and destroyed by fire in 1966.

On June 12, the owners of the hotel will host a cocktail reception for the public and media to show off the hotel’s new look. Tours of the new rooms and amenities will be offered.

Tracy Smith, principal of Smith & Co. Creative, the marketing firm that gave the Hotel North Woods its new style, said the goal is to establish a powerful and unique experience for guests.

“From custom rental bikes to branded door hangers and coffee mugs, to the Outward Hound program, every detail has been designed to create an authentic Adirondack experience re-imagined in a modern context,” Smith wrote.

That new pet-friendly program, “Outward Hound” will give visiting dogs a “designer” dog bed, a set of bowls, dog treats and a guide to local pet-friendly locations and amenities.

Starting at $3.92/week.
