Man, 22, dies in mishap at mill
JAY – State police say a 22-year-old man died Wednesday morning in a workplace accident at Ward Lumber.
The AuSable Forks Ambulance Service was dispatched at 11:06 a.m. to the mill at 702 Glen Road for a report of a man who was unconscious and not breathing.
Lance A. Sawyer II, 22, of AuSable Forks, was operating a board edger in the mill when he was struck in the chest with a board, which had kicked back, according to state police Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman.
Sawyer was transported to the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. He was pronounced deceased at 12:17 p.m. Wednesday.
Sawyer was engaged to Krystle Sawyer. They have three children; the youngest was born in August 2014. He regularly posted pictures of his fiancee and children on Facebook with loving messages.
He was a mixed martial arts fighter, competing under the nickname “the Destroyer.”
He was the son of Lance Sawyer and Crystal Sawyer.
Fleishman said the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration is helping state police investigate Sawyer’s death.
Sidney “Jay” Ward III, owner and president of the 125-year-old Ward Lumber, issued a statement expressing sorrow.
“Lance was a valued member of the team,” Ward said, “and he is missed by all of the Ward Lumber community and most of all by the sawmill crew who worked alongside Lance every day.”
