Rumors send police to Placid school

LAKE PLACID – Unspecified rumors from students at Lake Placid Middle/High School caused the village police to investigate and stay at the school most of Tuesday.

Middle school Principal Theresa Lindsay sent out an email to parents Tuesday to explain the situation.

“You may have seen or heard that the police were present this morning when students arrived at the Lake Placid Middle/High School,” Lindsay wrote. “This was a precautionary measure taken to address some non-specific rumors that a student shared with their parent late last night. The parent contacted the police and the police recommendation was that they have a precautionary presence here this morning. Safety is our number one concern and we will always err on the side of caution.”

One parent was disturbed and upset that parents weren’t told more specifics about what happened.

“If there is a police presence, I have to assume the threat was potentially bad enough to require their presence and what will be done to ensure safety when the police are no longer present,” Linda Wallace wrote in an email to the Enterprise. “I think the specifics of the threat should be shared.”

School district Superintendent Roger Catania told the Enterprise Tuesday night that there was an investigation over Monday night by the police.

“They assured me there was no risk to the school,” he said.

Catania did not specify what rumor caused the incident.

“There was no specific threat,” he said.

No arrests were made, according to the police department.

Catania said the police on Tuesday wanted to stay at the school just to be on the safe side. There was a patrol vehicle outside of the school Tuesday afternoon and also into the night.

Police Chief Bill Moore could not be reached for comment by press time.
