SARANAC LAKE — There is a new, full-time doctor delivering babies at Adirondack Health’s Stafford New Life Center in Saranac Lake, but for many patients and staff, she’s a familiar face.

Eve M. Burns, a doctor of osteopathy and fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1997, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008 and SUNY Upstate Medical University’s obstetrics and gynecology residency program in 2012.

As a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Burns practiced for the last six years in Plattsburgh, delivering an average of 90 babies a year while also performing about 130 annual gynecologic surgeries.

“I remember the compassionate care my grandmother received at Adirondack Medical Center, and later at home, as she battled terminal ovarian cancer,” said Dr. Burns. “So it means a lot to me to return home and help bring new humans into the world right here in Saranac Lake, while also providing guidance to women at all stages of life concerning their most personal health decisions.

“Plus, I now get to live closer to my mother, who has been a constant support.”

Prior to medical school, Dr. Burns studied biology at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. From 2001 to 2002, she worked as an infectious disease research assistant, conducting clinical trials at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Even then, she felt the gravitational pull of the Adirondacks and returned from 2002 to 2004 to research immunology and infectious disease with Dr. Laura Haynes at Trudeau Institute.

Dr. Burns and her husband, Frank, are looking forward to settling down here to raise their 18-month-old son, Oskar. Frank works at Trudeau Institute and is happy to have a significantly shortened daily commute. In her free time, Dr. Burns enjoys movies and reading books, as well as skiing, running, cycling and yoga.

A member of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, Dr. Burns works closely with Mary Rooks, a certified nurse midwife, and Dr. Denise Ferrando to provide full-spectrum obstetric and gynecologic services through Adirondack Health’s Women’s Health Center.
