Two people dead after falling through ice; child survives
NEWTON FALLS — Two men died over the weekend when a snowmobile went through the ice on a river in the northern Adirondacks during an ice fishing trip, according to state police, and a 6-year-old boy survived and made his way off the ice to a home.
According to police, at about 7:40 p.m. Sunday, troopers responded to County Route 60 in the town of Clifton for a report of individuals riding a snowmobile that fell through the ice.
Michael Booth, 48, of Oswegatchie, Bryan LaPlante, 33, and the boy, both of Newton Falls, were out ice fishing on Chaumont Pond, police said. The pond is connected to the Oswegatchie River and located in St. Lawrence County.
After the trio failed to return from the outing, Patrick LaPlante, 51, of Newton Falls, went out searching for them, according to police, did not say how the LaPlantes were related to each other.
Patrick found Bryan in the water and crawled on the ice to try to save him, police said, then Patrick fell through the ice as well.
According to police, Patrick was able to get back out of the water but then could not find Bryan or the other man and he returned to his home and alerted authorities.
Shortly after he got home, the boy who had been with the men ice fishing walked in, police said, and both the man and boy were taken to Clifton-Fine Hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
Emergency personnel responded to the river where Bryan and Booth were both found unresponsive in the water, according to police, and despite resuscitation efforts, the pair were later pronounced dead at Gouverneur Hospital.
State police were assisted by multiple local fire and rescue departments and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
An investigation is ongoing.
