Two arrested in Pakistan in connection with North Country teen suicide
CANTON — Two people in Pakistan have been arrested in connection with the suicide death of a North Country teenager last year. State police announced the arrests last week.
Shylynn Dixon was an 18-year old junior at Heuvelton Central School when she died last March.
State police said she was the victim of an online blackmail scheme. Police said in their investigation they found that Dixon shared nude photos of herself with someone online. That person then blackmailed her with threats of posting them and then posted on social media.
In their investigation, police and the FBI traced the Facebook account used to blackmail her to Pakistan. The FBI contacted Pakistani authorities who made the arrests. A state police spokesperson said the two will be tried in Pakistan under that country’s laws.
Dixon died a few weeks before another North Country teenager, Riley Basford died by suicide under similar circumstances. Basford was also the victim of a similar extortion scheme before his death.
State police said the FBI was also involved in the Basford investigation and the two cases were not related. The investigation of Basford’s death closed without any arrests.
