College at Brockport will again be SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT — The College at Brockport won’t be called that, at least not officially, beginning in July.

Brockport is part of the State University of New York, and it was called that for years until 2007 when it was renamed The College at Brockport.

But apparently that name didn’t resonate with students and prospective students.

A statement released by Vice President for University Relations Dave Mihalyov said that while it made sense to change the name from SUNY Brockport to The College at Brockport more than a decade ago, it now makes sense to change it again.

He says that last fall, Brockport did market research of prospective students and their parents.

The survey showed the strength of the SUNY brand and an overall lack of awareness of the connection between Brockport and SUNY.

And Brockport president Heidi Macpherson says that with the state’s Excelsior Scholarship program gaining more traction, it matters that students know that Brockport is part of the SUNY system.

So as of July 1, it will be known as SUNY Brockport again, and of course a number of changes will have to be made — not only online, but signs, banners and the like — and those will be phased in over time.

Officials also expect to reveal a revised logo later this year.
