Hample awarded FASNY scholarship
The Firefighters Association of the State of New York has awarded the 2024 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Pailin Hample of Long Lake.
Hample received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service in the community from FASNY. Hample is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention and other projects. Additional criteria include a consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
Hample is part of the Junior Firefighter Explorer Post program with the Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department in Hamilton County.
Hample credits the path life has taken from time spent at the fire department.
“My community involvement in the fire service has significantly shaped my life, by implementing values of service, camaraderie and resilience,” she said. “As a member of the fire service, I have experienced first hand the impact it has had on both me and the community I serve.”
Hample plans to attend Paul Smith’s College this fall. Outside of the firehouse, Hample has been on the high school varsity soccer, basketball and softball teams. Additionally, Hample has been on the school’s student council and has served as treasurer and vice president. Hample has also been inducted into the school’s National Honors Society program. Outside of sports, Hample has participated in the Northeast Instrumental Music Festival.
Hample also credits the fire service for the impact it has had on her life, including shaping her into the person she is today.
“Community involvement in the fire service has greatly impacted my life, shaping me into a more compassionate and resilient person,” she said. “Through its insistence on selflessness, camaraderie, and adaptability, the fire service has not only provided me with the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others but has also made a difference in my own life.”
The Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individuals, fire departments and auxiliaries.
